The Dalles Dip
The Dalles "Dip" was the summer swimming spot in the Columbia River before the Bonneville Dam raised the river level, and the WPA built the Natatorium on West Second Street in the 1930s. .

Sylvia Thompson & The Sorosis Society
Sorosis, a national women's organization, was organized in the latter half of the 1800's. The Dalles chapter was formed in 1902; many charter members were from original pioneer families who settled here in the mid 1800's.

Historic Columbia Highway
The Historic Columbia River Highway was designed by Samuel Lancaster and constructed between 1913 to 1922. Its purpose was not merely to provide an east-west transportation route through the Columbia River Gorge, but to take full advantage of every natural aspect, scenic feature, waterfall, viewpoint and panorama

H. L. Davis
Harold L. Davis's family moved to The Dales in 1908. Davis graduated from The Dalles High School in 1912. His first poems were published in 1919.


Eleanor Borg
Eleanor Borg (1910-2001) gave herself tirelessly to the betterment of children. Learning dance to overcome polio, she started teaching dance when she was 12 years old and continued teaching throughout her life.

The Chinese Community
During the mid-1800s to the early 1900s a large, vibrant Chinese community flourished in The Dalles. The Chinese occupied the one-story frame buildings on both sides of First Street from Union to Laughlin, with laundries, restaurants, lodging houses, gardens and stores selling items imported from China via western seaports. They were a vital economic contribution to the city.

The Dalles resident from age 1 . After Army, worked as painter on Columbia River dams. In 1958 joined father in Honald Sign Company

Jeanne Hillis
Jeanne Hillis (1917 - 2012) was born on a Blackfoot reservation where her father operated a trading post. These early years influenced her artwork and respect for Native American traditions. Prior to The Dalles Dam's completion in 1957, Jeanne relentlessly make rubbings of petroglyphs that would be lost forever under water.

The Latino Community
Since the early 1800's the Latino community has increased the diversity of The Dalles and has made an impact through small business, food, agriculture, contributing their culture of thought, language, education, careers, traditions, holidays, food, and events.

How The Dalles Got Its Name
The Dalles - In French, "dalle" is a large tile, a reference to flagstones used to line gutters. French-Canadian fur traders referred to tight, rocky water channels as "dalles." The grandes dalles (Long Narrows) and petit dalles (Short Narrows) were considered two of the most treacherous rapids on the Columbia River.

Thomas Condon
Thomas Condon was pastor of the fledgling Congregational Church in the 1860s. His interest in science led soldiers and teamsters who traveled the military road to the John Day gold fields to bring fossils to the parson.

Ben Snipes
Young Ben Snipes worked livestock for an Oregon-bound wagon train. He became wealthy supplying beef to hungry gold miners. It's estimated Ben eventually had a herd of 125,000.

Benjamin Gifford
Benjamin A. Gifford (1859-1936) was born, apprenticed, and had his first studio in the Midwest. He moved to Portland in 1888.
About 1895 he moved to The Dalles, he
operated a studio at the corner of 2nd and Washington Streets until returning to Portland in 1910.

Chief Tommy Thompson
Chief Tommy Kuni Thompson was the chief of Celilo (Wyam) Village from the late 1870s until the 1950s. He witnessed over a century of changes as a result of white resettlement of the region. He oversaw the salmon fishery at Celilo. His wife, Flora, was an important cultural leader.
